Rolf Structural Integration
Matthew Hartman, LMT
Rolf Structural Integration is a bodywork therapy which aligns and balances the body by lengthening and
repositioning imbalances in the connective tissue (also known as fascia) system. The practitioner applies
pressure to areas of the body where the fascia has shortened or tightened, working the entire fascial
system in a systemic way. As the fasica is lengthened and mobilized the muscles and joints move more
efficiently and the body can return to its structurally optimal position. When a body is aligned and
balanced it moves with greater ease and requires less energy to function within the gravitational field.

What is Rolf Structural Integration?
The circumstances which pull the body out of alignment are the result of physical injuries, emotional
trauma, illness, repetitive use activities, or everyday stress. The fascia remembers these events and
gradually shortens, tightens, and adjust to accommodate the misalignment. This creates an imbalance
and inefficiency within the entire system and results in stiffness, discomfort, and loss of energy. Gravity
becomes an obstacle to physical and psychological well being. By lengthening and opening the
imbalance in the connective tissue gravity flows through the individual. Good posture is effortless and
breathing is easier. The body becomes more flexible, more coordinated and personal potential is
enhanced.

Dr. Ida P. Rolf "This is the gospel of Rolfing: When the body gets working appropriately, the force of gravity can flow through. Then, spontaneously, the body heals itself."

What is a Session like?
Rolf Structural Integration is performed in a series of ten sessions. The ten sessions is
administered progressively: each session builds upon the accomplishments of the previous one
until complete integration of the body is achieved. This process balances the body around vertical
axis in three dimensional space.
Ten Session Series
Dr. Ida P. Rolf (1896-1979) was an extraordinary woman of her time. In the
1930's, dissatisfied with conventional medical treatments of the time she
explored Osteopathy, Homeopathy, Yoga, and Human Consciousness for
solutions to family health problems. By the 1940's she had developed and
experienced breakthroughs with the work she did on chronically disabled
persons unable to find help elsewhere. During her scientific research, she
made a fundamental discovery about the body: the same network of
connective tissue which contains and links the muscle system when it's healthy
can be used to reshape it when pulled out of proper order. Dr. Rolf further
refined her technique and developed a training program to insure this
important work would continue.
As a practitioner, Matthew will observe the client, how they stand, walk and other general movements. The client participates in
the session by breathing into an area being worked on and making specific movements as needed. During the session the client
may experience a warm, pleasant sensation from the area being worked with. Some individuals do not experience any sensation
while others may experience momentary discomfort. Matthew applies appropriate pressure based on the client's needs and
feedback. He helps individuals to become aware of habitual patterns of movement and imbalances in their body and assists them
to correct these patterns in their daily life.
